Moissanite vs. Cubic Zirconia vs. White Sapphire vs. Lab-Grown Diamond

Four colorless stones sell as diamond alternatives, and they are not interchangeable. Lab-grown diamond is a real diamond (Mohs 10). Moissanite is a different mineral, nearly as hard (about 9.25) with more fire. White sapphire is hard (9) but low on sparkle. Cubic zirconia is softer (about 8–8.5) and dulls with wear.

What are these four stones, actually?

They look similar in a photograph and are completely different materials underneath.

It is grown in a reactor rather than formed geologically, and that is the only real difference. It is not a simulant — gemologically it is the genuine article, and reputable labs grade it on the same scales while disclosing its laboratory-grown origin.
  • Moissanite is silicon carbide, a distinct mineral. Natural moissanite exists but is vanishingly rare, so essentially all gem moissanite is lab-created. It is its own gem with its own look, not a fake diamond.
  • White sapphire is colorless corundum — the same mineral family as blue sapphire and ruby, simply without the trace elements that produce color.
  • Cubic zirconia (CZ) is zirconium dioxide, a synthetic material with no meaningful natural counterpart in gem form. It was created specifically as a diamond simulant.

Two are diamond simulants (made to look like diamond), one is a real diamond, and moissanite sits in between: created as a simulant, now sold on its own merits. That distinction matters when you resell, insure, or describe the piece.

Note the two columns that don't move together: hardness and fire. CZ out-sparkles white sapphire dramatically but wears out; white sapphire barely sparkles yet stays crisp for decades. There is no single winner, only a fit.

Which one actually holds up to daily wear?

Hardness is scratch resistance, and on the Mohs scale it climbs unevenly — the gap from 9 to 10 is far larger than the gap from 1 to 2. That has a practical consequence for these four stones.

Ordinary household dust contains quartz particles at hardness 7. Anything meaningfully above that resists everyday abrasion; anything close to it slowly goes flat. Lab-grown diamond (10), moissanite (9.25), and white sapphire (9) all sit comfortably clear of the dust line and will keep their polish through years of ring wear. Cubic zirconia will not. At roughly 8–8.5 it starts hard enough, but CZ abrades faster than its Mohs number suggests, and the tell-tale life cycle of a CZ ring is real: brilliant for a season, then progressively hazy along the facet junctions where it takes the most contact. That cloudiness is surface damage, not dirt, and cleaning will not bring it back.

Hardness is only one third of durability, though. Toughness — resistance to chipping — runs on separate logic, and it's where diamond's reputation gets oversold: diamond has perfect cleavage in four directions and can chip from a sharp knock despite being the hardest natural material. Do they look different in real life?

Yes — and the differences are easiest to see in larger stones and in bright, direct light.

Moissanite has markedly higher dispersion than diamond, which produces vivid rainbow flashes. Some people love this; others find it reads as "disco ball," particularly above a certain size and under spotlights. Moissanite is also doubly refractive, meaning light splits into two rays as it passes through, and looking down through the crown at an angle you can sometimes see facet edges appear doubled. Diamond is singly refractive and never does this.

Cubic zirconia also throws more fire than diamond, but with less brilliance behind it, so the flash tends to look glassier rather than crisp. CZ is also notably dense — considerably heavier than a diamond of the same dimensions — which is why a loose CZ often feels wrong in the hand.

White sapphire is the outlier. Its refractive index and dispersion are both low relative to diamond, so it produces a soft, watery brightness instead of sharp fire, and it can read slightly milky or grey next to a diamond. Buyers who choose it usually want exactly that: a quiet, hard, colorless stone rather than a spectacle.

Lab-grown diamond looks like a diamond, because it is one. No visual test separates it from a mined stone — the distinction is made with specialized instruments in a lab, not by eye, and not by any at-home method. Which should you buy?

The honest answer depends on one upfront question: do you want a diamond, or do you want the look?

  • Choose lab-grown diamond if you want a genuine diamond, want maximum hardness, and want a piece that will survive being worn every day for decades and hold some resale value. It costs the most of the four, and it's the only one where the word "diamond" is accurate on the appraisal.
  • Choose moissanite if you want a large, brilliant, genuinely hard-wearing stone and you're comfortable with a look that isn't diamond's. It is the best durability-per-cost option here by a clear margin. Test it in daylight first — the extra fire is the one thing buyers regret.
  • Choose white sapphire if you want understated and tough, or if you specifically dislike heavy sparkle. Expect a softer glow, not brilliance, and know that it is a fine gem in its own right rather than a diamond substitute.
  • Choose cubic zirconia for fashion jewelry, travel copies of a valuable piece, or testing a shape and size before committing. Treat it as consumable — it will cloud, and replacing it is cheap.

The overall verdict: for a piece meant to last, moissanite and lab-grown diamond are the two serious contenders — moissanite wins on value, lab-grown diamond on authenticity and hardness.
