How to Read a Gem Lab Report (and Which Labs Actually Count)

The report is not a receipt and it is not a guarantee of value. It is one laboratory's documented opinion about one stone on one day — and the single most useful part of it is usually the small box at the bottom that nobody reads.

Report, Not Certificate

Serious laboratories call their documents reports, and that word choice is deliberate. A certificate implies a warranty; a report describes what trained graders observed under standard lighting and magnification. Nobody is promising you the stone is worth a number — in fact, most reputable diamond reports contain no monetary value at all.

That is the difference between a lab report and an appraisal. An appraisal states a value, usually a replacement value for insurance, and is very often written by the seller or a paid appraiser working from the seller's paperwork. It answers "what would it cost to replace this?" A lab report answers "what is this?" Only one of those is independent of the transaction. If a shop hands you a document with a big dollar figure and calls it a certificate, you have an appraisal, not a lab report.

The Anatomy of a Diamond Report

Nearly every diamond report carries the same skeleton. Read it in this order.

1. Shape, measurements, and carat weight

Measurements are given in millimetres to two decimals, plus a depth percentage and table percentage. These matter because two one-carat stones can look noticeably different in the finger: weight hidden in a deep pavilion buys you no visible spread.

A loose stone gets a full grading report; a stone already set in a mounting generally cannot, because the lab can see too little of it. Mounted stones get an identification report instead, with an estimated weight and a caveat about the limits of examination.

2. Colour

The D-to-Z scale was created by GIA and is now the industry default: D, E, F are colourless; G through J near-colourless; K onwards show warmth that becomes visible face-up. The scale runs to Z, beyond which a stone is graded as a fancy colour on an entirely separate system.

Grading happens face-down against a white tray, which is not how you will ever look at the stone. That is why the visible gap between an F and a G is far smaller in a ring than the price gap suggests.

3. Clarity

Flawless and Internally Flawless, then VVS1/VVS2, VS1/VS2, SI1/SI2, then I1 to I3 — all judged at 10× magnification by a skilled grader. "Eye-clean" is not a grade; it is a shopping outcome. Many SI1 stones are eye-clean and some VS2 stones are not, because the grade reflects the size, number, nature, and position of inclusions, and a small inclusion under the table is more visible than a larger one near the girdle.

This is where the plotting diagram earns its keep. Full grading reports include a plot showing where the inclusions sit; smaller-format reports (GIA's Dossier, for example) omit the plot and rely on the laser inscription instead. If a report has a plot, look at it — it tells you whether the inclusions are scattered at the edge or sitting dead centre.

4. Cut, polish, and symmetry

Cut is graded Excellent through Poor on standard round brilliants and is the grade with the largest effect on how a diamond actually looks. Fancy shapes — ovals, pears, emerald cuts — generally receive polish and symmetry grades but no overall cut grade, because there is no single agreed model of a perfect oval. That absence is not a red flag; it is the state of the science.

The American Gem Society Laboratories built a rival 0-to-10 cut scale, where 0 was Ideal. AGSL ceased grading operations in 2022 and its cut-grading intellectual property moved to GIA, so you will still meet AGS 0 reports on older stones in the resale market. They are legitimate documents; just know the lab that issued them no longer exists to re-examine the stone.

5. Fluorescence

Reported as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. It describes how the stone reacts to long-wave UV, not how it looks in daylight. Strong blue fluorescence sometimes trades at a discount in high colour grades and is sometimes actively desirable in warmer ones. It is a preference line, not a quality line.

6. The comments box — read this first, next time

Everything that changes what you are buying tends to end up here in small type: clarity enhanced, fracture filled, laser drilled, HPHT processed, treated colour, additional clouds are not shown. Lab-Grown Reports Read the Same, With Two Extra Lines

Since 2020, major labs grade laboratory-grown diamonds on the same colour and clarity scales as natural ones. Two additions appear:

  • Growth method — HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapour deposition), sometimes with a note that the stone was treated after growth to improve colour.
  • Mandatory disclosure — the report is headed as a laboratory-grown diamond report, and the girdle inscription includes wording such as "LAB-GROWN".

The grades are directly comparable. The market is not, which is a separate question covered in what happens to lab-grown resale value.

Coloured-Stone Reports Answer a Different Question

There is no universal quality grade for a sapphire or emerald. A coloured-stone report is primarily an identification and treatment document, and it typically states:

  • Species and variety — for example, corundum, variety ruby.
  • Origin, when offered — geographic origin determination is a specialist service from labs such as SSEF, Gübelin, AGL, and GRS. It is an opinion based on inclusion suites and trace-element chemistry, and it can materially move price for rubies and sapphires.
  • Treatment — the line that carries the money. For ruby and sapphire, the language you want is "no indications of heating"; heated stones are common, accepted, and cheaper. For emerald, clarity enhancement with oil or resin is near-universal and is described by degree — insignificant, minor, moderate, significant — with each step down reflected in the price.

An unheated Burmese ruby and a heated one can look identical in the tray and differ enormously in price. The report is the only thing standing between those two outcomes.

How to Verify a Report Before You Pay

Four minutes of work, in this order:

  1. Find the report number on the document.
  2. Look it up on the issuing lab's own website. GIA runs Report Check; IGI and the other major labs run equivalent verification portals. Navigate there yourself — never through a link or QR code supplied by the seller.
  3. Compare every field the lookup returns against the paper or PDF in your hand: weight, measurements, colour, clarity, comments. A doctored PDF is easy; a doctored database record is not.
  4. Match the laser inscription. Most modern reports record a report number inscribed on the girdle. Ask to see it under the shop's 10× loupe or microscope. This is the only step that ties this document to this stone, and it is the one most buyers skip.

Do the Labs Actually Disagree?

Yes, and it is worth understanding why rather than treating any one lab as infallible. Grading is human judgement applied to boundary cases, so two labs can land a grade apart on the same stone in good faith. It is also widely acknowledged in the trade that standards run tighter at some laboratories than others — which is why a stone's grades and its price should be compared within a lab, not across labs.

The practical rule: when you are comparing two stones, compare like-for-like paperwork. A G/VS2 from one lab and a G/VS2 from another are not automatically the same stone, and the price difference between them is often the market telling you exactly that.

FAQ

Is a lab report worth paying for on a small stone? Usually not below roughly a third of a carat, where the cost of grading is a large share of the stone's value. Below that, buy from a seller who will state clarity and colour in writing on the invoice and accept a return.

My report has no cut grade. Is something wrong? Almost certainly not — overall cut grades are generally issued for round brilliants only. On a fancy shape, judge the cut with your eyes and use the polish and symmetry grades, table and depth percentages, and the stone's actual face-up appearance.

Can a report be forged? The paper can. That is exactly why the verification steps above end with matching the girdle inscription to the number in the lab's own online database, checked on a page you navigated to yourself.

Does the report tell me what the stone is worth? No, and a document that does is an appraisal, not a lab report. The report describes the stone; the market prices it. Use the report to establish what you are comparing, then compare prices for that specification.

Read the comments box, verify the number on the lab's own site, and match the inscription with your own eye. Do those three things and you have removed most of the ways a certified stone can disappoint you.
