Hardness, Toughness, and Stability: Which Gems Survive Daily Wear

Ask most people how durable a gemstone is and they'll reach for one number: its Mohs hardness. It feels authoritative — a diamond is a 10, an opal is a 6, case closed. But that single number hides two other properties that matter just as much, and getting them confused is why a "hard" stone can still shatter on a doorframe, and why one of the toughest gems in the world sits well down the hardness scale.

The takeaway up front: gemstone durability is three separate things — hardness, toughness, and stability — and a stone can be excellent at one and poor at another. A diamond is the hardest natural material yet can chip from a sharp knock; jade is only moderately hard yet nearly impossible to break; an emerald tests hard but is brittle and chemically touchy. The three faces of durability

Gemologists split durability into three independent properties. A stone earns its "everyday" reputation only when all three line up with the job you're asking it to do.

  • Hardness is resistance to scratching and abrasion — the surface staying smooth and bright instead of going dull and hazy. This is what the Mohs scale measures.
  • Toughness is resistance to breaking, chipping, and cracking under a blow or pressure. It has nothing to do with hardness; it's about how the crystal holds together when struck.
  • Stability is resistance to damage from chemicals, heat, light, and changes in humidity — the things that make a stone fade, crack, dissolve, or cloud over time.

Miss any one of the three and a stone can disappoint. A gem can resist scratches yet chip easily, or shrug off knocks yet fade in sunlight. Durability is the weakest of the three links, not the strongest.

Hardness: the Mohs scale, and its limits

The Mohs scale ranks minerals 1 to 10 by whether one can scratch another — talc is 1, diamond is 10. It's genuinely useful shorthand, but it comes with two catches worth understanding.

First, it's relative and non-linear. The steps aren't even. Corundum (sapphire and ruby) sits at 9 and diamond at 10, but diamond is many times harder than corundum — the gap between 9 and 10 dwarfs the gap between 1 and 2. So "9" is not "almost a 10."

Second, and more practically: the number that matters most isn't 10, it's 7. Ordinary household dust contains fine particles of quartz, which is a 7. Any stone softer than that will, over years of wear, be slowly abraded by nothing more exotic than dust and daily handling — the polish goes flat and the facets lose their crisp edges. That's why 7 is the informal threshold for a stone that will stay bright in a daily-wear ring without babying.

Hardness tells you whether a stone stays bright. It says nothing about whether it survives a fall.

Toughness: why hard stones still break

This is the property most buyers overlook, and the source of the most surprising failures. Toughness is how well a stone resists chipping and cracking, and it depends largely on its internal structure — specifically on cleavage, the tendency of a crystal to split cleanly along flat planes where atomic bonds are weakest.

The headline example is diamond itself. At hardness 10, nothing scratches it — but a diamond has four directions of perfect cleavage, and a sharp blow at the wrong angle can chip or cleave one. Cutters exploit this on purpose; an unlucky knock against a countertop does it by accident. Hard does not mean unbreakable.

At the other extreme is jade (jadeite and nephrite), only about 6 to 7 on Mohs, yet legendary for toughness. Its crystals grow in a dense, interlocking, felted structure with no cleavage plane to split along, so it absorbs blows that would chip a harder stone. Ancient cultures carved jade into tools and blades precisely because it wouldn't shatter — a job a "harder" gem would fail.

Practical toughness notes for common stones:

  • Corundum (sapphire, ruby) has excellent toughness and no cleavage — a big reason it's the classic hard-wearing colored stone for rings.
  • Topaz is hard at 8 but has one direction of perfect cleavage, so it can split or chip from a knock despite resisting scratches.
  • Emerald tests 7.5–8 for hardness but is famously brittle: it's riddled with internal inclusions and fractures, and most emeralds are fracture-filled with oil or resin to improve clarity. Toughness is poor, which is why emerald rings deserve protective settings and gentle treatment.
  • Tanzanite is both fairly soft (6–6.5) and has cleavage, a double reason to keep it out of high-impact daily rings and favor earrings or pendants.

Toughness is what saves a stone when it meets a hard surface — and it runs on its own logic, independent of the Mohs number.

Stability: chemicals, heat, light, and water

The third property is about a stone's chemistry and internal state — how it reacts to the environment rather than to physical force. Several beautiful gems are perfectly hard enough yet quietly vulnerable here.

  • Opal contains up to around 20% water. In very dry air or sudden temperature swings it can lose that water and develop a network of fine cracks called crazing — damage that has nothing to do with being scratched or dropped.
  • Pearl, coral, and amber are organic and chemically reactive. Pearls are soft and porous, and acids from perfume, hairspray, and even sweat dull their nacre; amber is soft and dissolves in some solvents.
  • Turquoise is porous and readily absorbs oils, lotions, and dyes, which can discolor it over time.
  • Kunzite, amethyst, and some topaz can fade with prolonged exposure to strong sunlight — a stability issue driven by light, not wear.
  • Treated stones inherit their treatment's weaknesses: fracture-filled emeralds and rubies can be harmed by heat, ultrasonic cleaners, and solvents that attack the filler, and dyed or coated stones can lose color with abrasion or chemicals.

Stability is easy to forget because the damage is slow and quiet — a haze, a fade, a hairline crack that appears months later. It's also the property most often undone by well-meaning cleaning, which is a subject of its own.

Matching the stone to how you'll wear it

Durability only means something relative to a job. The same stone that's a poor choice for a ring is perfectly safe as a pendant, because different pieces take wildly different punishment.

  • Rings and bracelets take the most abuse — hands hit doorframes, keyboards, steering wheels, and countertops constantly. Reserve these for stones strong on all three fronts: diamond, sapphire, ruby, and spinel are the safe bets; quartz, garnet, and tourmaline are reasonable at hardness 7 with sensible care.
  • Earrings, pendants, and brooches barely get touched, so softer, more fragile stones — opal, pearl, tanzanite, emerald, moonstone — live happily here for a lifetime.
  • Setting matters too. A bezel (a metal rim wrapping the stone's edge) shields a vulnerable gem far better than raised prongs, and it's the smart choice for a softer or cleavable stone you still want to wear often.
  • When in doubt, treat it as fragile. If you can't identify a stone or confirm its treatments, assume the most cautious handling — the cost of being wrong is a stone you can't un-crack.

A soft or brittle stone isn't a bad stone; it's a stone with a narrower job. An opal ring worn gently and cleaned correctly can outlast a carelessly treated diamond.
